The crown chakra is associated with the color violet and its Sanskrit name is Sahasrana. Its symbol is represented by a lotus of 1,000 petals. The seventh chakra is what connects us to the Divine—where we receive power from “heaven” or “on high”. This is also the realm of prayer and grace. The crown chakra governs mystical experiences, transcendent though, and inspiration. “Living in the present moment” and accessing the power of Now are governed by this chakra. When we are powerfully moved by synchronicity, and feel connected to the Divine, we are tuning into chakra seven energy. This is also the area where we ask the tough questions about life purpose, the meaning of life, and God.
When we begin to ask these questions of the Divine, it is possible to enter what is known as the Dark Night of the Soul. This is a “spiritual depression” which is different than physical depression (although they can look very similar on the outside). We may feel like we’ve “lost our way” or that we’re “adrift”. When we ask these kinds of questions, we often “give up” our former identity. At least, we are searching for a new one, in many respects. We may feel totally cut off from any tribe and group—and it’s a place of just “me and God”. In the past, some worked out this spiritual angst through religious contemplation and seclusion. However, we are in an era of “everyday mystics”.
With the advent of the information age in the internet, “everyday” people have access to mystical texts and truths that were formally relegated to members of “secret” spiritual groups. Because there is an increase of people questioning the “big stuff” and searching diligently for spiritual answers, there is likely to be a modern dilemma unique to the 21st century: a Dark Night of the Soul we must learn to navigate through while doing laundry, carpooling, and grass cutting!
