Hindu metaphysicians believe that everything in the Universe is made up of sound patterns. Sound, like anything, is made up of specific energy patterns. A symbolic representation of these energy patterns are known as a seed sound or a bija mantra. The purpose of chanting seed sounds is to gain resonance with the object of the seed sound. Because sound and matter are connected, one can tap into the essence of the object--and even alter it. Recent experiments with sound and water shows the remarkable effect of certain types of music on water crystals. Soothing, classical music makes for symmetrical and intricate patterns, while music like heavy metal caused crystalline patterns to become distorted, mangled, and asymmetrical.
The chakras can also be stimulated through the power of sound, including healing music and Gregorian chants. Another way the chakras can be opened is through the bija mantras. Think of it as "sound yoga". Six of the seven chakras are also associated with a particular seed sound, which is said to hold the essence (and secrets) of that chakra. Here are the mantras you can chant to help with chakra blockages, allowing life force to flow freely through these energy regulators of the body:
Chakra One: LAM
Chakra Two: VAM
Chakra Three: RAM
Chakra Four: YAM (or SAM)
Chakra Five: HAM
Chakra Six: OM
Chakra Seven: no mantra
“The M in each of these sounds is said to represent the maternal and material aspect of the universe. The A sound in turn represents the Father, the nonmaterial. L (lam, earth) is a heavy, closing sound, while H in HAM (ether) is a light, airy, ethereal sound, and R (ram, fire) is an energetic, fiery sound.”
